We recently had the privilege of restoring a stunning set of massive, arched oak double doors, and the transformation is so dramatic we had to share it.

A Grand Entrance, Dimmed by Time
When we first arrived on site, the bones of the entrance were magnificent. Set within a beautiful, rugged stone archway, these doors had incredible character—the classic curved shape, heavy iron strap hinges, and the decorative clavos (studs) provided an undeniable sense of history.
However, as you can see from the ‘Before’ photo, years of exposure to the elements had taken their toll. The rich oak wood had faded to a dry, dull, grey-pink tone. The surface was parched, and the natural grain that should have been the main feature was completely obscured.
Furthermore, the extensive wrought iron hardware—the hinges, the intricate ring pull handles, and the hundreds of clavos—were rusted and dull, adding to the neglected feel. Even the smaller details, like the intercom box, looked dated and worn.
The doors were functional, but they had lost their soul. They no longer did justice to the building.
The Restoration Process
Restoring historic wood is a delicate balance. You must remove the damage without erasing the character. For this project, we used a meticulous, multi-stage process:
- Deep Cleaning and Stripping: We gently but thoroughly cleaned the wood, removing embedded grime, pollution, and the remnants of failing old finishes. This revealed the raw, albeit thirsty, wood underneath.
- Surface Preparation: The wood needed controlled sanding and conditioning to smooth the raised grain and prepare the pores of the oak to accept a new finish evenly.
- Hardware Refinishing: While the doors were being prepped, every piece of iron hardware—from the heavy hinges to each individual nail head (clavos)—was meticulously cleaned, descaled of rust, and refinished with a protective, deep matte-black coating.
- Re-Staining: This is where the magic happens. We worked with the client to select a rich, warm, walnut-oak stain that would complement the stonework. The application was crucial; we needed to ensure the stain penetrated deeply and evenly, bringing out the wood grain without looking artificial.
- Sealing and Protection: To ensure this restoration lasts for decades, we applied multiple coats of a high-performance, UV-resistant sealant. This not only protects the wood but adds the critical luster that was completely missing.
A Masterpiece Restored
The results, quite frankly, speak for themselves. The ‘After’ image reveals a stunning transformation.
Look at that finish. The parched, dull wood is gone, replaced by a deep, luxurious walnut luster. The light now catches the doors beautifully, highlighting the vertical plank construction and the gorgeous natural oak grain that was hidden before.
The difference in the hardware is equally dramatic. The now-blackened iron strap hinges and the polished ring pulls provide a striking, crisp contrast against the warm wood. Even the tiny clavos studs stand out as neat accents. Even the small intercom box on the left looks refreshed and less intrusive against the revived wood.
The stone archway itself seems brighter now, contrasting perfectly with the deep, rich tones of the restored entrance. It’s no longer a neglected entrance; it’s a statement piece.
